Introduction to Business Process Improvement:
An overview of tools and techniques
   EdgeLine Leadership Series
Description:  The drive for quality products and services has led many organizations to begin Business Process Improvement (BPI)  -- an examination of their own internal processes with an eye toward improving them in ways that will enhance their efforts to meet customer requirements and improve supplier inputs.  This two-day workshop looks at the drivers behind the push for continuous organizational improvement and the internal framework that must be in place to make a BPI initiative work.  Some basic BPI tools are taught and applied to real world processes.
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will:
  • Understand what processes are and how they operate
  • Identify present or potential performance gaps in their organization's processes
  • Learn how to use several BPI tools such as System Maps, Top Down Flow Charts, Process Maps and Gantt Charts to close the gaps and improve the cost, quality, service and speed of processes.

Outline: The agenda for the workshop:
  • What is a Process?
  • The Dynamics of Change
  • Five Steps to Business Process Improvement:
    • creating the necessary  framework
    • identifying customers and determining needs
    • mapping and measuring existing processes
    • redesigning the existing process
    • implementing the new design

Format:  This workshop is highly interactive with numerous individual and group exercises designed to demonstrate the use of the BPI tools, in addition to lecturette and video presentations

Audience: Who Should Attend:
Any level employee needing a basic knowledge of BPI and an overview of the tools associated with it should attend.

Length: 2 Days

Prerequisites: Attendees should be prepared to examine a process in their own organization and to work with others to analyze processes in a team environment.
